The monsoon has well and truly hit Goa.  The beautiful state has recorded 28 inches of rainfall so far, with Tuesday producing the heaviest shower. This day alone made up for 6 inches of the total. Actually the monsoon was delayed this year and only reached Goa on the 19th of June, after the pre-monsoon rains were not as frequent as expected by the experts.

One of the drawbacks of the heavy rain is that the fishermen have been advised to stay out of the waters for at least 1 day. Goa also has put in place its annual ban on fishing boats and mechanized trawlers since 1st June, to replenish the fish ecosystem and for fishermen’s safety.

Pests and insects

Over the last few days, the increase in fly’s and mosquitos among other insects has increased at nights in Goan homes, due to the dampness that arises from monsoon. These pests can also affect sleep. Plugging in a mosquito coil or lighting incense sticks can improve the situation. If that doesn’t work there is always repellent spray, but be warned this will not only scare of insects but your loved ones as well. Some Goans prefer to turn into Roger Federer and zap the flying objects with a battery operated shock racket.

Furry friends

While insects are drawn indoors during monsoon, so are our furry friends. These cats and dogs are usually domesticated pets kept in households by owners, but sometimes they are strays, just looking for shelter for the night. In fact just this morning a cat had got itself in trouble by falling into a neighbors well. Lucky for it, a ladder was placed into the well so that it could climb out to safety.

Umbrellas & water proofs

Due to the constant gushing of rain during monsoon, waterproof jackets are not enough, they clearly need to be monsoon proof. It is worth investing in a good rain coat and rain trousers to match, especially if you are travelling by scooter. Travelling by bus is just as uncomfortable, as most of the time the conductors make you remove your wet overalls before boarding the bus. It can be more convenient to use an umbrella on these occasions.

Falling trees and traffic can also delay you, so just remember to set off on your journey that little bit earlier during monsoon. One more thing, if you are walking in the street and you see a large car approaching, just remember to move well away as some drivers are inconsiderate and will have no hesitation in splashing you with their wheels as they speed off.

Viva Sao Joao

While all these stories may put you off visiting Goa during the monsoon, they shouldn’t.  Actually Goa is most beautiful during the monsoon and there is plenty to see and do, like trekking and festivals such as Sao Joao and Sangodd which are soon approaching. So if your due for a vacation, put on your wellington boots, follow the above tips and start packing for a fun time ahead.
