“Early to bed, early to rise…” Old sayings perhaps not really followed in Goa when on a holiday. Is there a balance between the old and the new? Enter Pumpernickel. Elizabeth Saal the owner has opened this outlet, popularly known as Lila’s Café, for health foods. Start your day with a simple breakfast of a croissant or a baguette with their home-made orange marmalade; or maybe their croissant sandwich. Their repertoire of omelettes listed with 12 different fillings could be a delightful brunch. Or have some home-made Water Buffalo Ham, Aubergine Pate or Chicken Liver Pate on German bread. Elizabeth and her chefs make their own coarsely ground wheat bread with a sour dough starter. It is baked slowly over coconut shells. It may take some time getting used to it but the health benefits are humongous. There is a delightful choice of European food.

The Goulash Spatzele is the proprietor’s recommendation. It is cooked in the German style with a 1:1 proportion of meat and onion and then paprika is added to spice up the flavor. Or maybe the Beef Roulades – the pickle flavour could tickle those sleepy taste buds awake. In the Smoked Kingfish with Salad, the fish fillets are smoked over coconut shells with lime and salt for 20 minutes. The place is also well known for its bakery products. The Kuaoke Brot, a Swedish style of Biscuit, is one to be sampled. Try it with a little pate. And for the sweet tooth, the display cabinet tempts. Cakes and tarts are made from pure butter—walnut cake and strawberry tart. So “late to bed and late to rise…” With a dose of Pumpernickel you can get healthy, wealthy and wise.
