In developments that might worry Goa Dairy, Gujarat-based Surat District Cooperative Milk Producers Union has been allowed to expand in Goa. SUMUL will now cover two-thirds of the state. The move was mainly passed to increase competitiveness in the sector and increase the efficiency of the incumbent player.

Speaking on the decision Agriculture Minister Ramesh Tawadkar said, “Despite my personal interference and asking them on several occasions to improve, they displayed arrogance and carelessness. Therefore we decided that unless we do not introduce competition we will not be able to provide justice to the farmers,”

SUMUL has been allowed to operate in four more talukas of Goa. Earlier it was given permission to operate in Sanguem, Quepem, Canacona and Sattari. It had started its operation in the state on May 1 of the current year.
