You might be friendly ‘Ciao” as you ascend a flight of steps. Tucked away in a quiet corner of Calangute, off the busy Candolim-Calangute main road near Literati bookshop, is this alfresco Italian restaurant on three different split levels, the middle just right for lounging over drinks. It’s a great place to drop in for a drink and snacks…a single section with gaddis to create the mood. Start with the cocktail Elixir la Fenice (pronounced che). The mixed fruit combo with spirits adds to the ambience at night. Very romantic with the trees in the garden, alongside the dining tables, attracting a large number of small fruit bats who make a delightful sight as they fit in between the branches. Nibble on a Crostini – choose from mushrooms or mare (prawns). Or let thesecond round be a Caipiroska with fairy jokes. This is no joke – it’s a snack with prunes, almonds and bacon. La Fenice is an unit of the well-known ABC Farms of Pune and the place is very popular with the Italian expat crowd in north Goa. The bar is always open, and as you leave don’t’t forget to say ‘Caio’.
